Words: Dan Hayes

T he much-anticipated event will include paintings and works on paper by surrealist artists including Salvador Dali, Jane Graverol, Francis Picabia, René Magritte and Man Ray.

Highlights of the sale include the 1932 painting Salaganes by Picabia which has an estimate price of €150,000-€200,000 (£125,000-£165,000).

The French artist, who once said, “If you want to have clean ideas, change them like shirts”, produced works that spanned painting, performance, poetry, publishing and film during a 50-year career. He was also no stranger to controversy, being an early proponent of courting media attention.

Other highlights of the sale include Please do not Disturb by Man Ray (estimate: €120,000-€180,000), which combines printed card, string and magnets; Sun Over the Sea, a 1928 work in gouache and pencil by Max Ernst (estimate: €80,000-€120,000); and Dali’s Evocation 2 1944, a signed, dated and titled pencil, ink and coloured pencil creation on paper (estimated between €250,000 and €350,000).

The sale is scheduled for 30 April at Bonhams Avenue Hoche salerooms in Paris.
