Raising Standards

The Standard, Brussels, to open in the city’s Northern Quarter.

Words: Dan Hayes

T he Standard, Brussels, is scheduled to open in the city’s regenerated Northern Quarter, close to the city’s Noordstation, in May.

This latest incarnation of the Hyatt-owned brand follows properties in London and Ibiza and was the work of Belgian-based Jaspers-Eyers Architects and Bernard Dubois Architects. It will provide 200 rooms and suites spread across 28 storeys and forms part of a wider redevelopment on the site of Brussels’ former World Trade Centre.

Acknowledging the city’s Surrealist heritage, guestrooms will feature a mixture of design influences including elements of 1970s Americana, alongside inspirations from quirky 1930s Belgian design and Japanese post-modernism.

In keeping with Brussels’ reputation as a gastronomic hotspot, the hotel will offer three dining options. These include the ground floor Double Standard restaurant, with a menu combining American and Belgian classics, complemented by an extensive selection of beers.

Meanwhile there is also the mid-century-inspired lobby bar, with high ceilings and distinctive red-brick flooring plus the 29th-floor Lila29, where patrons can enjoy panoramic views of Brussels as they sample Iberian-inspired dishes and a varied cocktail menu.

The lobby meanwhile doubles as a lounge space, where visitors and guests can relax with a coffee or talk business adjacent to a garden that brings a relaxing touch of greenery to proceedings.

The Standard also offers extended-stay suites for visitors who require a base for weeks or months. Set on the two top floors, these rooms average 50 sq ft and include living room, workspaces and kitchenettes.

Rates start from €‎200 (£170) per night. To book, visit The Standard website.
