Distilled magic

In a landmark moment for the historic distillery’s pioneering whisky making comes the first release from the Scottish oak programme

T he Fettercairn distillery, established in 1824 and renowned for its progressive and innovative whisky making, has announced the launch of its inaugural 18-year-old single malt – the pioneering distillery’s first ever whisky finished in locally sourced Scottish oak.

Set to be an annual release, the golden-hued and smooth-nosed whisky has been refined in American white oak casks with a hand-crafted finish in 100% Highland Scottish oak, creating a liquid that is innovative in style and substance.

It celebrates what makes Fettercairn different – from the surprisingly tropical-house style achieved by the distinctive copper cooling ring distillation method, to its future-focused, progressive approach to local sourcing and working with the land in Aberdeenshire – ‘The Garden of Scotland’.

Perfectly bottled to be enjoyed at 46.8%, Fettercairn 18-year-old is natural in colour and non-chill filtered, showcasing the brand’s meticulous approach to cask management and whisky making.

With a character defined by richness and depth, it plays on mature fruit flavours, toasted oak, fresh patisserie aromas and rich mouthfeel with soft spice balances cacao and berry fruits.

There are aromas of sugared almonds, passion fruit, baking spices, guava and soft oak spice which fill the nose and are complemented by notes of peaches in syrup, sugar, brioche, cinnamon, nutmeg, cacao, vanilla and red berries throughout the palate.

Gregg Glass, Master Whisky Maker, said: 'The Fettercairn 18 is a culmination of an approach to whisky making I have developed across a number of years. This first release reflects the dedication not just of myself, but of our partners from forest to field, who each played a role in rekindling the skills required to harvest Scottish oak.

'At Fettercairn we are passionate about the potential of Scottish oak and the unique flavour characteristics it offers to the whisky maker.'

Fettercairn 18-year-old is priced at an RSP of £175 and is available now from retailers including The Whisky Exchange, Harrods, Selfridges and The Whisky Shop. For more information, visit the Fettercairn Whisky website.
