9 November 2020Bonhams’ November sale is led by two 20th-century greats
T here are some big names on show at Bonhams’ Modern British and Irish Art sale in London on Wednesday 18 November.
Top of the bill for many will be David Bomberg’s The Old City and Cathedral, Ronda (estimated at £400,000-£600,000). Bomberg (1890-1957), traumatised by his experiences in the First World War, moved to Spain in 1934 and set many of his finest works in the Andalusian city of Ronda.
In his painting, the city’s cathedral and old city are recognisable, but Bomberg also uses his brushwork to emphasise the drama, colours and light of his new home.
Bonhams Director of Modern British & Irish Art, Matthew Bradbury said: ‘The Old City and Cathedral, Ronda is a wonderful work embodying the painter’s sense of liberation both personally and artistically. It is celebratory painting, executed with admirable verve by an artist who had fallen in love with Spain.’
The sale also offers two works by official war artist William Roberts (1895-1980) including Munitions Factory, painted in 1940 as a preparatory sketch for the oil painting of the same name now in the City of Salford Museums and Art Gallery.
Bradbury said: ‘Munitions Factory is rooted in Roberts’ own experiences working in a munitions factory during 1915 and manages to successfully incorporate his expertise into the composition while at the same time giving centre stage to the individual workers including mechanics, welders and plate-cutters coming together with quiet confidence work in at time of national emergency.’
Bonhams Modern British & Irish Art is due to take place on Wednesday 18 November at 3pm.
