B onhams Paris will be showcasing an eclectic mix of Surrealist works at its March sale.

A selection of rare Surrealist artworks will go under the hammer at Bonhams auction house in Paris on Wednesday 27 March.

One highlight of the sale, which marks the centenary of the Surrealist movement, will be Le bon bout de la raison by the female Belgian artist Jane Graverol, which has an estimate of €50,000-€70,000 (£42,000-£60,000). Other items include works by artists such as Rachel Baes, Leonor Fini, Dorothea Tanning and Félix Labisse.

Emilie Millon, head of Bonhams’ Impressionist & Modern Art department in Paris, said: ‘In 1924, surrealist activities started in France. This sale will explore the poetry of the world's most famous surrealists through themes such as the dream, the unknown and the subconscious.’

The past year has witnessed a rapid rise in sale prices for works by Graverol in particular. In March 2022, at Sotheby’s in Paris, the artist’s La déesse raison smashed its estimate of €2,600-€3,500 to sell for €47,880.

A year later, at Sotheby’s London, Graverol’s painting L’Esprit Saint changed hands for £508,000, with the artist’s Le trait de lumière selling for €579,975 at Bonhams’s inaugural Surrealist sale in Paris shortly afterwards.
