T hree years after planting vines at its 40-hectare Pinglestone Estate in Hampshire, French champagne house Vranken-Pommery (maker of Vranken, Pommery, Charles Lafitte and Heidsieck Monopole champagnes) has completed its first-ever grape harvest on UK soil.
And, while the mixture of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier vines have been establishing themselves, prior to the predicted release of the first vintage of Pinglestone Estate in 2023, Vranken-Pommery has already released its first English sparkling wine, Louis Pommery England, after sourcing grapes from nearby vineyards.
Clément Pierlot, Champagne Pommery’s chef de cave and the man charged with making sure the English newcomer is up to scratch, said: ‘This first vintage was predicted to be exceptional, but it is way beyond our expectations.’
He added that good spring weather followed by a dry and sunny summer had caused the grapes to ripen early, allowing for picking to start earlier in the season than usual: ‘We were rewarded with marvellous healthy bunches with optimal maturity levels.’
According to Pierlot, Louis Pommery England has overtones of green apple, fresh lemon and lime, plus a ‘delightful’ mineral finish.
