A nyone who enjoys their travels in Italy should find something to whet their appetite in the latest photographic retrospective from publisher Taschen.
Italy 1900 is the latest in a series of books that bring together selections of colourised and monochrome imagery from the turn of the twentieth century.
The pages reveal a country that was just starting out on its national journey, but many of whose most iconic sites actually remain profoundly familiar.
Within the title's pages are shots of cities such as Florence, Milan, Pisa, Rome and Venice as well as street scenes and rural vistas that hint at what real life was like for the Italians of 120 years ago.
Women in traditional dress wash laundry and shop for food, while men are captured at work in the fields or taking time out to chat at pavement cafes.
All in all the book provides a fascinating insight into a long-lost lifestyle, and one where (and this is perhaps the most notable factor of all) the motor car was an extremely rare visitor.
If you own a property in Italy, are a regular visitor, or simply have a liking for Italian culture or the early years of photography this remarkable volume should make a fascinating addition to your bookshelf.
