21 November 2020Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer is the focus of the National Gallery’s spring show.
H ere’s one for the diary, assuming we’re not still in lockdown of course... The National Gallery will be running a major exhibition devoted to German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer in March next year.
It’s been more than 20 years since the multi-talented Dürer was the focus of a major UK show and most of the 100 or so works in the National’s display have never before have been exhibited in Britain.

The curators have opted for exploring the artist’s works via his travels; showing how the people and places he visited affected his life and work. Its focuses include Dürer’s journeys to the Alps and Italy in the mid-1490s; to Venice in 1505–7; and to the Low Countries in 1520–1; all of which helped to boost his fame and influence.
Dürer’s Journeys – Travels of a Renaissance Artist includes paintings, drawings and documents usually on show in Berlin, Madrid, Lisbon and Washington DC, among others.
This breadth of provenance seems appropriate, as exhibition curator Dr Susan Foister explained : ‘Dürer’s art knew no boundaries, neither territorial nor intellectual. His constant, questing intellectual curiosity opened up fruitful exchanges with artists in the north and south of Europe.
‘Uniquely for his time, Dürer recorded aspects of his life not only in his art but also through letters and journals. His voice resonates across five centuries to speak to us today.’
The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Dürer’s Journeys – Travels of a Renaissance Artist is at the National Gallery from 6 March until 13 June 2021.
