8 September 2022For the first time in history Portugal’s royal jewels are being shared with a wider audience
I t's over a century since the nation had a crowned head, but the Portuguese royal family's collection of exquisitely worked gold and jewellery is still a sight to behold.
The thousand or so pieces on display include priceless examples of metalwork such as the emerald bowl of Queen Mariana, said to be crafted from the world’s second-largest gold nugget, and a tobacco box commissioned by King Joseph I from the King of France's goldsmith in the 18th century.
The museum highlights the artistic and symbolic value of the exhibits, explaining their role in the processes of the monarchy, its ceremonial functions, diplomatic activity and religious rites.
Other highlights of the collection include jewels from the private collections of a variety of members of the Portuguese royal family.
Also on show are some of the most valuable crown jewels, including the royal crown, the sceptres and the two remaining mantles, which were used during the accession ceremony of each new monarch.
For more information go to the Portuguese Royal Treasure Museum’s website.
